SLP Resource
Last-minute planning?? Want a back-up plan in case your star performer gets laryngitis? Check out the terrific compilation of ideas put together by the Youth Services Section of the Wisconsin Library Association. This includes handouts from the statewide Summer Library Program workshop last fall, but it has had regular updates with ideas from librarians around the state!

Americans with Disabilities Act Anniversary

Katherine Schneider, founder of the ALA Schneider Family Book Award, president of the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library Board, newly pubished author, and frequent presenter of workshops and webinars at IFLS, recently contacted me. She said,
July 26 is the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. That's sort of like the Fourth of July for those of us with disabilities.
Katherine suggested that libraries might like to put together displays that celebrate and inform people about the disability experience. She sent along a few suggestions for books to pull for display, I will be happy to forward the whole list if you would like it--it has materials for adults and youth on it. In the meantime, a great starting place is to display the books that have won the ALA Schneider Family Book Award, for authors and illustrators who have created a book that embodies the disability experience.
You might also like to adapt the following into a bookmark or handout, for people looking for more information or resources:

It's time to gear up for the annual Book Cart Drill Team Competition at this year's Wisconsin Library Association Conference at the Kalahari Resort in Wisconsin Dells. Register your team and get crackin' on your routine for a chance to win a prize from DEMCO. The competition will take place on the evening of Wednesday, November 3rd.
Are you a Book Cart Drill Team newbie? Here's a sample from last year's competition:

Does this look like fun, or what?? If you think you'd like to form a team for this year's contest in the Dells, you can contact Leah--langby@ifls.lib.wi.us. Always before, this suggestion has met with resounding silence, but maybe you've loosened up in the past year!

Freebies for SLP Decorating
Need some supplies for last-minute SLP decorations? I have some pretty swell things to give away to an IFLS library. First come, first serve, though if you send me some content for the blog, I'll be oh-so-happy! Send an email to langby@ifls.lib.wi.us and tell me which thing suits your fancy most. Here is one:

Cleaning out closets, we found these left-over decorations from a retirement party for Milton! Put them to use again in your library!

A very soft, very charming flamingo hand puppet (courtesy of Barb Huntington at DPI)

Aaargh! A pirate face-frame for photo opportunities in your library!
Send me your requests! And your posts!!
